Winter at Discovery Southeast: Dredge Lakes
What a better way to spend your winter than outside with Discovery Southeast?
This year we got to spend time out at Dredge Lakes for a program with the Latitude 58 Theater Group. It was a blast to be out along Mendenhall River, making forts and discovering clues to the past.
Can you believe we found an entire vertebrae? To figure out what type of animal we found, we put our heads together. and checked out the surrounding areas.
This longer vertebrate made us think we had a k-9 on our hands.. After some careful consideration, we found the information we were looking for. Check out the longer vertebrae behind the Shoulder blade (Scapula) in this diagram. Researching a variety of wolf skeleton images helped us come to our conclusion.

We had many questions to ponder that day. .
What was the wolf doing? How long had he been in the area? What type of animal could take out a wolf this time of year?
We also found a dead eagle in close proximity to the wolf skeleton. Did he stop in for a treat and get taken out by a competitor? Maybe this particular predator got lucky with both animals? No one knows the whole story, only clues to help us make up our own!

Shorter days are approaching- Are the dark mornings getting to you?

Interesting article regarding obesity rates in the US- Let's get outside!
Why is having a relationship with nature so important?
We all know how great it feels to wake up and have lovely views of the ocean and our southeast mountains! It is also said that working in an office with a window to view nature helps us through the day. While being able to see nature when driving reduces drivers stress and creates a more enjoyable ride.
Why be concerned with children and nature?
Our children are in school for 6.5 hours a day, a long time for children to mostly be indoors. Let's help them spend more time to reflect on their days and run around in fresh air and green space. There is more time for creative play in natural settings, which is proven to aid in children's mental health and overall social skills. Being outside allows children to exercise and appreciate their environments. Discovery Southeast knows just how to get kids outside enjoying nature and exercising in many ways! Check out our DSE Programs page to learn more about our offerings throughout the year.

Kayaking, ropes course, intertidal exploration and more!
Through phyical activity and natural play, children have the chance to improve their health and well-being. Unfortunately, physical activity levels have dropped significantly in both children and adult lives, resulting in outrageous obesity rates throughout the US. Check out this new report, exploring adult obesity rates and their potential to exceed 60% by 2030.
